Vertical Quantum Confinement in Bulk MoS.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Dto. de Física de Materiales, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 28040 Madrid, Spain.

We experimentally observe quantum confinement states in bulk MoS by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The band structure at the Γ̅ point reveals quantum well states (QWSs) linked to vertical quantum confinement of the electrons, confirmed by the absence of dispersion in and a strong intensity modulation with the photon energy. Notably, the binding energy dependence of the QWSs versus does not follow the quadratic dependence of a two-dimensional electron gas.

Methylcellulose enhances resolution in gravitational field-flow fractionation: Going beyond viscosity.

Department "Area Materno-Infantile" Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan Italy.

Gravitational Field-Flow Fractionation (GrFFF) is an elution-based method designed for the separation of particles ranging from a few micrometers up to approximately 100 μm in diameter. Separation occurs over time, with particles being fractionated based on size and other physico-chemical properties. GrFFF takes advantage of gravitational forces acting perpendicularly to a laminar flow in a thin channel.

Cholestasis caused by impaired bile secretion in the liver is associated with the accumulation of primary bile acids (BA): cholic acid (CA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) in the cells of this organ. The paper studies the uncoupling effect of the CA and CDCA on the succinate-fueled rat liver mitochondria under conditions of ΔpH to Δψ conversion by nigericin. It has been established that without nigericin, the dependence of the resting-state (state 4) respiration rate on the concentrations of these BA is nonlinear and is described by a parabolic equation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores a new method for solving parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with fractional orders, focusing on both space and time dimensions.
  • It combines the Galerkin weighted residual method using modified Bernoulli polynomials for spatial terms and a finite difference approach for temporal terms, emphasizing the convergence of the time fractional component.
  • The proposed technique is tested on the fractional Black-Scholes model and other numerical problems, with results presented in detailed tables and 3D visualizations, showing improved accuracy compared to existing methods.

Article Synopsis
  • Bacopa monnieri juice (BMJ) is recognized for enhancing memory, but its potential to combat diabetes remains under-researched.
  • The study successfully reduces the bitterness of BMJ using ZnSO, while demonstrating that both BMJ and the debittered version can effectively inhibit α-glucosidase enzyme activity, crucial for managing blood sugar levels.
  • Molecular docking analysis reveals significant interactions between the active compounds in BMJ and the α-glucosidase enzyme, suggesting that a debittered BMJ formulation could be developed for diabetes management.
