Article Synopsis
  • Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common surgical procedure for patients with severe knee osteoarthritis, especially when non-surgical treatments fail, leading to significant improvements in pain, function, and quality of life.
  • The procedure can use various components (cemented, cementless, or a hybrid) and is generally performed with a focus on mechanical alignment, although newer alignment strategies like gap and kinematic balancing are showing promising results in early studies.
  • The preferred surgical technique for cementless TKA involves a specific patient positioning and incision approach, starting with the application of a thigh tourniquet and a parapatellar incision, ensuring proper alignment and access during the surgery.*

Purpose: To evaluate the response of human peri-implant soft tissue (PIST) to different healing abutment materials 24 hours after positioning by assessing the expression of genes related to the early connective tissue wound healing response.

Materials And Methods: The following four materials were used to create experimental abutments that were mounted on implants placed in five patients (four different abutments in each patient): group A-grade 4 titanium (Ti), group B-grade 5 Ti, group C-zirconia (Zr), and group D-polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Before implant placement, a gingival biopsy (control, CT) sample was obtained using a 2-mm-diameter punch (T0).

Sheet metal blanking process is a manufacturing process that is widely used in sheet metal forming and particularly in the electronics and automotive industries. The outcome and quality of the blanked parts are affected by various parameters such as the blanking clearance, the sheet metal mechanical properties and the wear of tools. However, experimental campaigns to assess the effects of these parameters on the process outcome can be prohibitively expensive for the industry.

High-throughput microcontact printing of proteins in microwell cell culture plates.

MethodsX

June 2024

Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, Canada.

Microcontact printing (MCP) is used to pattern a surface with a specific compound, allowing the spatially restricted response of cells to be assayed as they encounter a molecule of interest. MCP is a relatively low-cost and accessible technique that uses commercially available reagents and common cell culture equipment. However, it can be technically challenging, slow, and incompatible with microwell cell culture plates that are widely used for screening and other applications.

Multi-Wave Punch for Follicular Unit Excision Hair Transplantation Surgery.

J Cutan Aesthet Surg

January 2023

V Design Hair by Dana International, Bangkok, Thailand.

Follicular unit excision is widely used for hair transplantation because it lacks a donor scar and is associated with less postoperative pain. Obtaining high-quality grafts and minimizing hair follicle damage during graft harvesting are key. This review elaborates on the types and dynamics of punches used in follicular unit extraction.
