This review is about drops of a liquid with high dielectric permittivity that slide over a solid surface with high electrical resistivity. A typical situation is a water drop sliding down a tilted hydrophobic plate. It has been realized recently that such drops spontaneously acquire a charge.

Janus particles (JPs), initially introduced as soft matter, have evolved into a distinctive class of materials that set them apart from traditional surfactants, dispersants, and block copolymers. This mini-review examines the similarities and differences between JPs and their molecular counterparts to elucidate the unique properties of JPs. Key studies on the assembly behavior of JPs in bulk phases and at interfaces are reviewed, highlighting their unique ability to form diverse, complex structures.

High-velocity traumatic amputations of the proximal upper extremity are devastating to the patient and represent an extreme surgical challenge to the treatment team. The hand surgeon must simultaneously battle devascularization with timely microvascular anastomosis, gross contamination with meticulous debridement, and amputation with stable fixation. In restoring a functional extremity, many of these goals are in contention with each other.
