Pre-eclampsia is a known hypertensive disorder of pregnancy. While abnormal placentation and poor trophoblast invasion into maternal endometrium during blastocyst implantation are primary causes of pre-eclampsia, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Hematopoietic PBX-Interacting protein (HPIP) is an estrogen receptor (ER) interacting protein that plays a pivotal role in cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation; however, its role in trophoblast functions is largely unknown.

This study reports on the influence of lactic acid fermentation on the proteomic and peptidomic profiles of spirulina protein isolate (SPI)-fortified, freeze-dried powders containing living Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) cells during in vitro digestion. For comparison, powders fortified with whey protein isolate (WPI) and pea protein isolate (PPI) were also evaluated. Prior to freeze-drying, the powder precursors were either non-treated or fermented.

Viruses were shown to encode proteinases in the 1970s. Initially, it was assumed that they would be only used for proteolytic processing of the viral proteins. Subsequent investigations showed that such proteinases could affect host metabolism to benefit viral replication.

The mammalian Hippo kinases, MST1 and MST2, regulate organ development and suppress tumor formation by balancing cell proliferation and death. In macrophages, inflammasomes detect molecular patterns from invading pathogens or damaged host cells and trigger programmed cell death. In addition to lytic pyroptosis, the signatures associated with apoptosis are induced by inflammasome activation, but how the inflammasomes coordinate different cell death processes remains unclear.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) X protein (HBx) is a key factor for regulating viral transcription and replication. We recently characterized homeobox protein MSX-1 (MSX1) as a host restriction factor that inhibits HBV gene expression and genome replication by directly binding to HBV enhancer II/core promoter (EnII/Cp) and suppressing its promoter and enhancer activities. Notably, HBx expression was observed to be repressed more drastically by MSX1 compared to other viral antigens.
