This study employs Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to investigate the potential causal association between genetic variants associated with gut microbiota, inflammatory factors, and the risk of uterine fibroids development. We extracted data on 211 types of gut microbiota, 91 inflammatory factors, and uterine fibroids occurrence from genome-wide association studies and applied the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method for analysis. To further assess the robustness of our MR analysis, we conducted sensitivity tests including Cochrane's Q test, the MR-Egger intercept test, the MR-PRESSO global test, and a leave-one-out analysis.

GWAS-Significant Loci and Uterine Fibroids Risk: Analysis of Associations, Gene-Gene and Gene-Environmental Interactions.

Front Biosci (Schol Ed)

December 2024

Laboratory of Genomic Research, Research Institute for Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology, Kursk State Medical University, 305041 Kursk, Russia.

Background: Uterine fibroids (UF) is the most common benign tumour of the female reproductive system. We investigated the joint contribution of genome-wide association studies (GWAS)-significant loci and environment-associated risk factors to the UF risk, along with epistatic interactions between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

Methods: DNA samples from 737 hospitalised patients with UF and 451 controls were genotyped using probe-based PCR for seven common GWAS SNPs: rs117245733 , rs547025 rs2456181 , rs7907606 , , rs58415480 , rs7986407 , and rs72709458 .

Article Synopsis
  • Lichong decoction (LD) is an effective and safe treatment for uterine leiomyoma (ULM) based on traditional Chinese medicine, though the exact mechanisms of its effects aren't fully understood.
  • The study aimed to investigate how LD improves ULM by analyzing its impact on cell viability, apoptosis, and gene expression, along with tests using a rat ULM model.
  • Results indicated that LD reduced cell viability and induced apoptosis in ULM cells, and it was found to decrease fibrosis and inflammation by inhibiting the CXCL8/PI3K/AKT pathway, highlighting several bioactive compounds in LD that may contribute to its therapeutic effects.

National Utilization Trends of Inpatient Procedures for Symptomatic Uterine Fibroids and Adenomyosis: A 10-Year Analysis.

J Am Coll Radiol

December 2024

Assistant Professor, Interventional Radiology Residency Program Director, Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, Department of Radiology, University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine changes in procedural utilization for symptomatic uterine fibroids and adenomyosis from 2011 to 2020.

Methods: An institutional review board-exempt retrospective study of the National Inpatient Sample database from 2011 to 2020 was performed using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, and International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, diagnosis and procedural codes for uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, hysterectomy, myomectomy, uterine artery embolization (UAE), and endometrial ablation. Patients with endometriosis, uterine cancer, placenta accreta spectrum, pelvic inflammatory disease, and uterine prolapse were excluded.

Inflammatory fibroid polyps (IPF), also called Vanek tumors, are rare, benign lesions of mesenchymal origin. They can affect both sexes with a majority incidence between 50-70 years.¹² We present the case of a 53-year-old woman with an outpatient clinic due to severe iron deficiency anemia, gastroscopy and colonoscopy without relevant findings.
