Runoff and accumulation of microplastics derived from polymer-coated fertilizer in japanese paddy fields.

Environ Toxicol Chem

January 2025

Research Institute for Bioresources and Biotechnology, Ishikawa Prefectural University, Nonoichi, Ishikawa, 921-8836 Japan.

Polymer-coated fertilizers, widely used in rice cultivation in Japan, contribute to reactive nitrogen management and agricultural productivity but are a source of microplastics in the environment. Here, we investigated microplastics derived from polymer-coated fertilizer (microcapsule) runoff in Japanese paddy fields at 38 sites to quantitatively assess the behavior of microcapsules in paddy fields, and to estimate the total amount of runoff and accumulation in Japan. We also examined the factors causing variations in the amount of runoff among paddy fields.

Enhancing beer authentication, quality, and control assessment using non-invasive spectroscopy through bottle and machine learning modeling.

J Food Sci

January 2025

Digital Agriculture, Food and Wine Research Group, School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Science, Faculty of Science, The University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Fraud in alcoholic beverages through counterfeiting and adulteration is rising, significantly impacting companies economically. This study aimed to develop a method using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy (1596-2396 nm) through the bottle, along with machine learning (ML) modeling for beer authentication, quality traits, and control assessment. For this study, 25 commercial beers from different brands, styles, and three types of fermentation were used.

The anionic species of antimony(V) and phosphate(V) are commonly found in the contaminated soil of mining areas, exerting a significant influence on the sorption of heavy metals and thus affecting their migration. This study quantitatively discussed the sorption mechanism of Sb and P in promoting the sorption of Cd or Cu on goethite through a series of extraction methods. In the single sorption system, the majority of Cu (87-98%) is adsorbed on goethite in the form of EDTA-extractable Cu (EF Cu, possibly inner-sphere complexes) under pH conditions of 3.

The aim of this research is to analyze the attitude of future teachers toward death education and which are the factors that influence their predisposition about it. For this, a quantitative study with a descriptive-inferential cross-sectional design was carried out with a sample composed of 204 Primary Education Degree students from the University of Malaga. The Death Education Attitudes Scale-Teachers was implemented as a validated instrument, in which biological, emotional, identity, contextual, formative and motivational factors were considered within the attitude's incidence.

Purpose: The dentato-rubro-thalamo-cortical tract (DRTC) is considered to play a crucial role across tremor disorders including tremor dominant Parkinson's disease (TDPD) and essential tremor plus (ETP). This study aims to comprehensively evaluate microstructural integrity of the DRTC using single-compartment, i.e.
