Mixed reality for preoperative planning and intraoperative assistance of surgical correction of complex congenital heart defects.

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

January 2025

Division of Cardiology, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, ON, Canada; Center for Image Guided Innovation and Therapeutic Intervention, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, ON, Canada.

Objectives: Mixed reality (MixR) is an innovative visualization tool that presents virtual elements in a real-world environment, enabling real-time interaction between the user and the combined digital/physical reality. We aimed to explore the feasibility of MixR in enhancing preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance for the correction of various complex congenital heart defects (CHDs).

Methods: Patients underwent cardiac computed tomography or cardiac magnetic resonance and segmentation of digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) images was performed.

The GacS/GacA two-component system strongly regulates antimicrobial competition mechanisms of MFE01 strain.

J Bacteriol

January 2025

Laboratoire de Communication Bactérienne et Stratégies Anti-infectieuses (CBSA UR4312, formerly LMSM EA4312), Univ Rouen Normandie, Université Caen Normandie, Normandie Univ, Rouen, France.

Unlabelled: MFE01 is an environmental bacterium characterized by an hyperactive type 6 secretion system (T6SS) and a strong emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In a previous study, a transposition mutant, 3H5, exhibited an inactive T6SS and altered VOC emission. In 3H5, the interruption of gene by the transposon was insufficient to explain these phenotypes.

Background: An anomalous left vertebral artery (aLVA) can complicate aortic arch surgery. We examined the safety of various aLVA revascularization strategies during open total arch replacement.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 92 patients undergoing total arch replacement from January 2018 to May 2023 and identified 11 patients with aLVA.

A novel hyperactive variant of the transposase facilitates non-viral genome engineering.

Mol Ther Nucleic Acids

December 2024

Research Center, Division of Hematology, Cell and Gene Therapy, Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, 63225 Langen, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • The SB transposon system is valuable for genetic applications like gene therapy, and a new hyperactive variant of the SB100X transposase, known as SB200X, was discovered with a specific amino acid change that increases its activity by about 2-fold.
  • This hyperactivity is linked to an amino acid at position 124, located in the transposase's structural region, suggesting it can partially resist a regulatory mechanism called overproduction inhibition.
  • Additionally, the Q124C variant not only boosts the efficiency of another variant (K248R) but also helps maintain a safer profile for genome-wide integration, making SB200X a promising tool for genome engineering in research and clinical settings.

The Experience and Complications of Lipoabdominoplasty for Chinese Post-bariatric Population.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

December 2024

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Shanghai 9th People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, 639 Zhi Zao Ju Road, Shanghai, 200011, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the growing trend of post-bariatric lipoabdominoplasty in China, addressing the challenges of significant weight loss and skin laxity in patients.
  • Over a five-year period, 23 patients underwent the procedure which included various surgical techniques, resulting in generally favorable aesthetic outcomes but a notable complication rate of 34.8%.
  • The main complication was hypertrophic scarring, and the results suggest that traditional lipoabdominoplasty may be more suitable for Chinese patients compared to alternative surgical options.
