Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to assess the long-term outcomes (20-30 years) of patients who underwent surgery for Blount disease by reviewing medical records and contacting former patients.
  • Out of 105 eligible patients, only 16 agreed to participate, revealing a high prevalence of obesity (average BMI of 45.8) and some concerning health outcomes, such as knee osteoarthritis.
  • The findings suggest that retrospective studies have limitations in evaluating the long-term effects for pediatric orthopedic conditions, highlighting the need for more prospective research focused on obesity and socioeconomic factors in treatment.

Background: A high prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies has been reported in case series of patients with neurological manifestations and COVID-19; however, the pathogenicity of antiphospholipid antibodies in COVID-19 neurology remains unclear.

Methods: This single-centre cross-sectional study included 106 adult patients: 30 hospitalised COVID-neurological cases, 47 non-neurological COVID-hospitalised controls, and 29 COVID-non-hospitalised controls, recruited between March and July 2020. We evaluated nine antiphospholipid antibodies: anticardiolipin antibodies [aCL] IgA, IgM, IgG; anti-beta-2 glycoprotein-1 [aβGPI] IgA, IgM, IgG; anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin [aPS/PT] IgM, IgG; and anti-domain I βGPI (aD1β2GPI) IgG.

Background: Glycogen storage disease type II (GSDII) or Pompe disease is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder that leads to intracellular glycogen storage in many tissues, mainly in skeletal muscle, heart and liver. Facial muscle weakness and altered craniofacial growth are very common in Pompe disease children. In this paper we describe the orofacial features in two children affected by GSDII and illustrate a multidisciplinary approach that involved enzyme replace therapy, non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and pediatric dentistry with 5-year follow-up.
