Halogen-substituted para-benzoquinones (p-BQs) are emerging disinfection byproducts known to induce oxidative damage both in vitro and in vivo. However, as ubiquitous oxidation byproducts, the in vivo toxicity and transport mechanism of non-halogenated p-BQs with similar structure of α, β-unsaturated ketones to halogenated p-BQs have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, the effect of substituents on toxicity and transportation of 2-chloro-1,4-benzoquinone (CBQ) and 2-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (MBQ) was systematically investigated.

Textile effluents are important sources of pollutants in aquatic environments. The textile industry in China has been relocating from developed to less developed regions, yet the potential environmental impact of textile effluents remains unclear. Here, we investigated the acute toxicity of wastewater collected from different processing units of two textile wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in a large industrial park in Guangxi province (Southwest China), using whole effluent toxicity testing.

Hernia repair is the most common surgical operation applied worldwide. Mesh prostheses are used to support weakened or damaged tissue to decrease the risk of hernia recurrence. However, the patches currently used in clinic applications have significant short-term and long-term risks.

Key Clinical Message: Although the symptoms of accidental chlorine inhalation are typically mild, severe exposure can result in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We present a case of pediatric ARDS due to chlorine exposure in which lung lavage and exogenous surfactant were successful in avoiding more invasive and costly treatments.
Abstract: Chlorine inhalation as a result of swimming pool chlorination accidents is relatively common.

Enveloped viruses, such as flaviviruses and coronaviruses, are pathogens of significant medical concern that cause severe infections in humans. Some photosensitizers are known to possess virucidal activity against enveloped viruses, targeting their lipid bilayer. Here we report a series of halogenated difluoroboron-dipyrromethene (BODIPYs) photosensitizers with strong virus-inactivating activity.
