(Group A ; GAS) is an exclusively human pathogen. This bacterial species is responsible for a large variety of infections, ranging from purulent but mostly self-limiting oropharynx/skin diseases to streptococcal sequelae, including glomerulonephritis and rheumatic fever, as well as life-threatening streptococcal toxic-shock syndrome. GAS displays a wide array of surface proteins, with antigenicity of the M protein and pili utilized for M- and T-serotyping, respectively.

The salivary mucins that include MUC5B (gel-forming) and MUC7 (non-gel-forming) are major contributors to the protective mucus barrier in the oral cavity, and it is possible that dietary components may influence barrier properties. We show how one dietary compound, the green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), can substantially alter the properties of both the polymeric MUC5B network and monomeric MUC7. Using rate-zonal centrifugation, MUC5B in human whole saliva and MUC5B purified from saliva sedimented faster in the presence of EGCG.

Cells resist death induced by the complement membrane attack complex (MAC, C5b-9) by removal of the MAC from their surface by an outward and/or inward vesiculation. To gain an insight into the route of MAC removal, human C9 was tagged with Alexa Fluor 488 and traced within live cells. Tagged C9-AF488 was active in lysis of erythrocytes and K562 cells.

Polyvinyl alcohol sponges inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus peptidoglycan induce an accelerated wound healing response when implanted subcutaneously in rats. S. aureus peptidoglycan leads to a marked increase (50%) in reparative tissue collagen (as measured by hydroxyproline) by 4 days.
