Evidence accumulated mitochondria, as the "powerplants of the cell," express several functional receptors for external ligands that modify their function and regulate cell biology. This review sheds new light on the role of these organelles in sensing external stimuli to facilitate energy production for cellular needs. This is possible because mitochondria express some receptors on their membranes that are responsible for their autonomous responses.

We conducted a descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study using an online survey to explore the personality traits of volunteers in Lebanon and examine their relationship with work engagement, psychological status, resilience, and public service motivation. A total of 270 volunteers were recruited through social media platforms. The survey included general questions about volunteering, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-9 items (UWES-9), the Big Five Personality Inventory-10 (BFPI-10), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), the Public Service Motivation (PSM), and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-2 (CD-RISC2).

Aim/hypothesis: Pilots with type 1 diabetes are required to perform capillary glucose monitoring regularly during flights. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) may be an effective and more practical alternative. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of CGM systems against self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) during a hypobaric flight simulation.

The Effect of Sex Hormones on Joint Ligament Properties: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Am J Sports Med

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Background: Sex differences exist in injury rates, and one contributing factor may be sex hormone effects on the musculoskeletal system.

Purpose/hypothesis: The goal of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to understand the effects of sex hormones on ligaments in females as determined by preclinical and clinical studies. The hypothesis was that sex hormones would affect ligament mechanical properties, histological features, cellular function, and clinically measurable outcomes.

The chloroperoxidase from (CPO) catalyzes the oxidative ring expansion of α-heterofunctionalized furans via the Achmatowicz rearrangement, providing an elegant tool to convert furan rings into complex-prefunctionalized scaffolds. However, the mechanism of this transformation remains unclear. Herein, the CPO-catalyzed reaction of 1-(2-furyl)ethanol () is studied by quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations.
