Introduction: Invasive candidiasis is an important cause of nosocomial infection and recent studies have shown an increase in the number of cases during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The present study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology and incidence of invasive candidiasis before and during the COVID-19 pandemic at a reference tertiary hospital in Brazil.

Methodology: A retrospective observational study was performed with 148 patients infected with Candida spp.

Fungal infections (FIs) are widespread globally, affecting both immunocompromised and immunocompetent children, with varying clinical implications based on age and comorbidities. In immunocompromised children, particularly those with hematologic oncological conditions, FI leads to substantially longer hospital stays and increased in-hospital mortality, with reported rates ranging from 15% to 20%. Our study aims to analyze the epidemiological trends of fungal infections in the pediatric population within a specific region of Italy.

Microplastics in Agricultural Crops and Their Possible Impact on Farmers' Health: A Review.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

December 2024

Department Innovative Technologies in Medicine and Dentistry, University "G. d'Annunzio", Via dei Vestini, 66100 Chieti, Italy.

The indiscriminate use of plastic products and their inappropriate management and disposal contribute to the increasing presence and accumulation of this material in all environmental zones. The chemical properties of plastics and their resistance to natural degradation lead over time to the production of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics, which are dispersed in soil, water, and air and can be absorbed by plants, including those grown for food. In agriculture, MPs can come from many sources (mulch film, tractor tires, compost, fertilizers, and pesticides).

is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen causing nosocomial transmission and invasive infections with high mortality. This study aimed to investigate the genetic relationships, enzymatic activities, and drug-resistance profiles of isolates to evaluate the population and epidemiological diversity of candidiasis in Russia. A total of 112 clinical isolates of were analyzed from May 2017 to March 2023 in 18 hospitals across Saint Petersburg, the Leningrad Region, and Moscow.

Molecular Epidemiology and Antifungal Susceptibility Profile of Candidozyma Isolates From Argentina.

Mycoses

January 2025

Departamento Micología-Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Infecciosas "Dr. Carlos G. Malbrán", Buenos Aires, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Background: Epidemiological surveillance of Candidozyma sp. has become important because many species of this new genus have been reported to be responsible for nosocomial outbreaks and to exhibit elevated minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) to one or more classes of antifungal drugs.

Objectives: To describe the genetic relationships among Argentinian clinical isolates belonging to the Candidozyma genus and to study the molecular mechanisms associated with antifungal resistance.
