The 11-hydroxy metabolites of Delta(8).- and Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol are more active than the parent compounds when administered to mice by either the intravenous or intracerebral route. Both Delta(8)- and Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol are rapidly and extensively metabolized by the liver and not by the brain. The hypothesis that the 11-hydroxy metabolites may be the active form of tetrahydrocannabinol is discussed

Recently, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) isomers and other semi-synthetic cannabinoids have been introduced into the consumer market as alternatives to botanical cannabis. To assess the prevalence of these potential new analytical targets, a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry confirmation method was developed for the quantitation of seven cannabinoid metabolites and the qualitative identification of four others in urine. The validated method was applied to authentic urine specimens that screened positive by immunoassay (50 ng/mL cutoff; n=1300).

Introduction: This study investigated exposures involving ∆8-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆8-THC) reported to US poison centers (PCs), including variation among states and regions. It evaluated whether the ∆8-THC exposure rate was lower among states with ∆8-THC regulations and states where cannabis (∆9-THC) use was legal.
Methods: National Poison Data System data for ∆8-THC exposures in 2021-2022 were analyzed, including comparisons of state and regional population-based exposure rates.
