, a non-fermenting gram-negative bacterium, is emerging as an important multidrug resistant opportunistic pathogen. It has been described in cases of bacteremia, pleuritis, keratitis and peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis. We describe, for the first time, a case of pyogenic liver abscess caused by coinfection of and , and briefly review pyogenic liver abscesses and the literature regarding .

Background: Strategies to expand numbers of deceased donor kidneys suitable for pediatric recipients are urgently needed to prevent long-term dialysis-associated morbidity and mortality. Donors designated as increased risk of disease transmission (IRD) are infrequently used in pediatric recipients. We examined outcomes of these kidneys in pediatric patients and the potential to increase the donor pool.

Infections are a significant complication for dialysis patients. The CDC estimates that 37,000 central line-related bloodstream infections occurred in hemodialysis patients in 2008 and dialysis-associated outbreaks of hepatitis C continue to be reported. While established hospital-based infection prevention programs have existed since the 1970s, few dialysis facilities have an established in-center program, unless the dialysis facility is hospital-associated.

Introduction: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in hemodialysis (HD) patients are associated with adverse outcomes, especially after kidney transplantation.

Review: In the HD setting, cross-contamination to patients via environmental surfaces, supplies, equipment, multiple-dose medication vials and staff members is mainly responsible for both HBV and HCV transmission. The incidence and prevalence of HBV in HD centers have dropped markedly as a result of isolation strategy for HBsAg positive patients, the implementation of infection control measures and the introduction of HBV vaccine.

Increase of octanoate concentrations during extracorporeal albumin dialysis treatments.

October 2009

Divisions of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine II, University Rostock, Rostock, Germany.

Extracorporeal liver support procedures based on albumin dialysis require the use of pharmaceutical-grade human serum albumin (HSA). Those preparations contain octanoate, which is added as stabilizer during the production process. For octanoate, a direct involvement in the pathogenesis of liver failure complications as well as an indirect influence by competitive displacement effects at the albumin molecule have been described.
