Influence of Laser Micro-Texturing and Plasma Treatment on Adhesive Bonding Properties of WC-Co Carbides with Steel.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Metal Forming, Welding and Metrology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, 50-370 Wrocław, Poland.

This article presents research on advanced surface preparation methods for sintered carbides (WC-Co, grade B2) commonly used in the tool industry, particularly in the context of bonding these materials with C45 steel using adhesives. Sintered carbides are widely used due to their high hardness, wear resistance, and good ductility, making them ideal for manufacturing tools operating in harsh conditions. Traditional bonding methods, such as brazing and welding, often result in stresses and cracks.

We describe a method to run simulations of ground or excited state dynamics under extremely high pressures. The method is based on the introduction of a fictitious ideal gas that exerts the required pressure on a molecular sample and is therefore called XP-GAS (eXtreme Pressure by Gas Atoms in a Sphere). The algorithm is most suitable for approximately spherical clusters of molecules described by quantum chemistry methods, Molecular Mechanics or mixed QM/MM approaches.

Investigation of the Properties of Anti-Friction Coatings Deposited with Different Casting Methods.

Materials (Basel)

June 2024

Department of Production Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Design, Kaunas University of Technology, Studentu St. 56, 51424 Kaunas, Lithuania.

This article presents the research results of depositing anti-friction coatings (Babbitt) using three different casting methods: static casting, flame soldering, and clad welding. Babbitt alloy coatings deposited with different casting methods are discussed and explained in terms of changes in the coating properties, such as the microstructure, hardness, strength, and chemical composition. The results showed significant differences in the aforementioned properties, depending on the chosen coating deposition method.

Based on a recent experimental determination of the static polarizability and a first-principle calculation of the frequency-dependent dipole polarizability of argon, this work presents, by using a Fabry-Perot refractometer operated at 1550 nm, a realization of the SI unit of pressure, the pascal, for pressures up to 100 kPa, with an uncertainty of [(1.0 mPa) + (5.8 × 10P) + (26 × 10P)].

Additive manufacturing inert gas flow path strategies for multi-laser powder bed fusion systems and their impact on lattice structure mechanical responses.

3D Print Med

April 2024

Division of Applied Mechanics, Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, United States Food and Drug Administration, 10903 New Hampshire Ave., WO62-2215, MD, 20993, USA.

Multi-laser Additive Manufacturing systems hold great potential to increase productivity. However, adding multiple energy sources to a powder bed fusion system requires careful selection of a laser scan and inert gas flow strategy to optimize component performance. In this work, we explore four different laser scan and argon flow strategies on the quasi-static compressive mechanical response of Body Centered Cubic lattices.
