E. Coli cytotoxic necrotizing factor-1 promotes colorectal carcinogenesis by causing oxidative stress, DNA damage and intestinal permeability alteration.

J Exp Clin Cancer Res

January 2025

Department of Cardiovascular, Endocrine-Metabolic Diseases and Aging, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome, Italy.

Background: Bacterial toxins are emerging as promising hallmarks of colorectal cancer (CRC) pathogenesis. In particular, Cytotoxic Necrotizing Factor 1 (CNF1) from E. coli deserves special consideration due to the significantly higher prevalence of this toxin gene in CRC patients with respect to healthy subjects, and to the numerous tumor-promoting effects that have been ascribed to the toxin in vitro.

Molluscan marvels of Gujarat: exploring species distribution and conservation strategies using a spatial approach.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

January 2025

Division of Marine and Freshwater Biology, Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, Gujarat, India.

This study delves into the Molluscan diversity along the Gujarat coast, India, focusing on the distribution and habitat suitability of four key species: Cerithium caeruleum, Lunella coronata, Peronia verruculata, and Trochus radiatus. Utilizing species distribution models (SDMs) integrated with machine learning algorithms, we assessed the impact of environmental variables on the distribution patterns of these molluscs. Our findings reveal a nuanced understanding of habitat preferences, highlighting the critical roles of salinity, chlorophyll concentration, and water temperature.

Water conveyance channels in cold and arid regions pass through several saline-alkali soil areas. Canal water leakage exacerbates the salt expansion traits of such soil, damaging canal slope lining structures. To investigate the mechanical properties of saline clay, this study conducted indoor tests, including direct shear, compression, and permeation tests, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of soil samples from typical sites.

Water is a critical component in polyelectrolyte anion exchange membranes (AEMs). It plays a central role in ion transport in electrochemical systems. Gaining a better understanding of molecular transport and conductivity in AEMs has been challenged by the lack of a general methodology capable of capturing and connecting water dynamics, water structure, and ionic transport over time and length scales ranging from those associated with individual bond vibrations and molecular reorientations to those pertaining to macroscopic AEM performance.

Calcium (Ca) is necessary for bone health and metabolic functions in poultry, however, the extent to which it can be utilized varies among feed ingredients. The goal of this study was to determine the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of calcium in wheat and soybean meal (SBM) in young quail chicks using a direct method. Three dietary treatments were used in the experiment: a calcium-free basal diet to determine endogenous calcium losses, and two diets with either wheat or SBM as the primary calcium sources.
