Enhancement of oil dispersion and marine oil snow formation by surface-active biomasses from diatom.

Mar Environ Res

January 2025

College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Dalian Maritime University, Dalian 116026, China. Electronic address:

Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill event, the formation of marine oil snow (MOS) has attracted much attention from marine environmental scientists. This study investigates the crude oil dispersion as well as the MOS formation in the presence of Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Chaetoceros sp. through laboratory experiments.

Cleaning and sterilization are critical Prerequisite Programs in sanitation management based on HACCP. Most food factories clean and sanitize equipment daily after production using detergents containing benzalkonium chloride (BAC). However, in factories that produce oil and fat-rich foods, it has been discovered that microbes can persist on production equipment.

Biological activities observed in living systems occur as the output of which nanometer-, submicrometer-, and micrometer-sized structures and tissues non-linearly and dynamically behave through chemical reaction networks, including the generation of various molecules and their assembly and disassembly. To understand the essence of the dynamic behavior in living systems, simpler artificial objects that exhibit cell-like non-linear phenomena have been recently constructed. However, most objects exhibiting cell-like dynamics have been found through trial-and-error experiments, and there are no strategies for designing them as molecular systems.

Encapsulation of Oil Droplets Using Film-Forming Janus Nanoparticles.

Langmuir

January 2025

School of Chemistry, Key Centre for Polymers and Colloids, The University of Sydney, Sydney, New South Wales 2006, Australia.

Polymer Janus nanoparticles with one hard cross-linked polystyrene lobe and one soft film-forming poly(methyl methacrylate--butyl acrylate) lobe were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated emulsion polymerization. The Janus nanoparticles adsorbed to oil/water and air/water interfaces, where the soft lobes coalesced, forming films of thickness between 25 and 250 nm; droplets of silicone oil could be stably encapsulated in polymer in this way. When prepared by mechanical mixing without additives, capsules of diameter 5-500 μm could be prepared, and with additives and application of heat, capsules of diameter around 5 μm were achieved, even with highly viscous silicone oil (20,000 cSt).

Phase-Engineered ZrO for Tuning Catalytic Oxidation of Dichloromethane Over W/ZrO:Zr-Doped WO Clusters and the Hydrolysis-Oxidation Mechanism.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Green Chemical Engineering and Industrial Catalysis, Research Institute of Industrial Catalysis, School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai 200237, PR China.

Catalytic elimination through an oxidative decomposition pathway is the most promising candidate for the purification of chlorinated volatile organic compound (CVOC) pollutants, but the complicated mechanisms and the formation pathways of hydrogenated byproducts still need to be clearly revealed. Herein, W/ZrO, as a structure-tunable catalyst, is used to catalytically oxidize dichloromethane (DCM) and clarify the formation pathway of monochloromethane (MCM). Crystal engineering of ZrO tailors surface WO species; practically, the predominant Zr-WO clusters and crystalline WO can be obtained on monoclinic (m-ZrO) and tetragonal (t-ZrO) phases.
