Medicinal leech therapy (MLT) is used in various medical disciplines, among which are reconstructive surgery and microsurgery. Medicinal leech therapy is also often adopted by alternative and traditional medicine, aiming to treat various common medical symptoms, such as fever and arthritis. Congenital umbilical hernia is a rather common physical finding in the pediatric population, where every third Caucasian newborn, roughly, is being diagnosed with the condition, and even more so among the African population.

Background: Natural history studies have correlated serotype-specific anti-capsular polysaccharide (CPS) IgG in newborns with a reduced risk of group B streptococcal disease. A hexavalent CPS-cross-reactive material 197 glycoconjugate vaccine (GBS6) is being developed as a maternal vaccine to prevent invasive group B streptococcus in young infants.
Methods: In an ongoing phase 2, placebo-controlled trial involving pregnant women, we assessed the safety and immunogenicity of a single dose of various GBS6 formulations and analyzed maternally transferred anti-CPS antibodies.

Background: The clotting or hemostasis system is a meticulously regulated set of enzymatic reactions that occur in the blood and culminate in formation of a fibrin clot. The precisely calibrated signaling system that prevents or initiates clotting originates with the activated Factor Seven (FVIIa) complexed with tissue factor (TF) formed in the endothelium. Here we describe a rare inherited mutation in the FVII gene which is associated with pathological clotting.

Background: Omphalocele consists of congenital malformation of anterior abdominal wall defects occurring at the midline with herniation of the viscera through this defect. Giant omphaloceles constitute a challenging situation as such conservative management has been advocated as an effective method of treatment. This study aimed to compare the conventional method of dressing the omphalocele sac using gauze, an escharotic agent, and a crepe bandage to our improvised method of the usage of a sterilization wrap over the escharotic agent with a crepe bandage.
