Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on patients with Brucella spondylitis (BS), averaging around 52 years old, primarily affecting males, and linked to close contact with livestock and unpasteurized food.
  • The diagnostic effectiveness of the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and Standard Agglutination Test (SAT) was notably high at 94.6%, compared to a low blood culture positivity rate of 7.8%.
  • Common symptoms included fever, back pain, and fatigue, with imaging showing the lumbar spine, especially L4/5, as frequently affected; after treatment, the recurrence rate was low at 3.0%.

An Automated pre-Dilution Setup for Von Willebrand Factor Activity Assays.

Bio Protoc

September 2024

R&D Global Medical Affairs, Baxalta Innovations GmbH, a Takeda company, Vienna, Austria.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurate measurement of von Willebrand factor ristocetin cofactor activity (VWF:RCo) is essential for diagnosing von Willebrand disease and evaluating VWF products in the pharmaceutical industry, despite current high variability in lab results.
  • A new automated method for determining VWF:RCo minimizes manual errors with a pre-dilution setup, leading to consistent results comparable to experienced technicians.
  • This operator-independent protocol enhances standardization and efficiency in conducting VWF activity assays while maintaining high precision and accuracy.

Profound and transient thrombocytopenia of functional platelets without bleeding was observed in patients envenomed by (). This condition was rapidly reversed by administration of F(ab) fragments of immunoglobulin G targeting the whole venom, leaving platelets fully functional. To investigate the potential role of snake venom C-type lectin-like proteins (snaclecs) in this process, -snaclecs were isolated from the crude venom using different liquid chromatographies.

June 2024

Department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic and Breast Surgery, Ehime University, Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine, 454 Kou, Shitsukawa, Toon, Ehime, 791-0295, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses a first case of laparoscopic hepatectomy performed on a 76-year-old male patient with von Willebrand Disease (VWD) type 2B, highlighting the complexity of treating individuals with inherited coagulation disorders.
  • The patient had a history of chronic hepatitis C and underwent surgery to remove a 4 cm liver tumor, with unique challenges related to his low platelet count and bleeding risk during the procedure.
  • Post-surgery, the patient experienced complications including hemorrhagic fluid drainage and a detected bleed in the greater omentum, indicating the need for careful monitoring following such operations in similar high-risk patients.
