Adaptation optimizes sensory encoding for future stimuli.

PLoS Comput Biol

January 2025

Department of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America.

Sensory neurons continually adapt their response characteristics according to recent stimulus history. However, it is unclear how such a reactive process can benefit the organism. Here, we test the hypothesis that adaptation actually acts proactively in the sense that it optimally adjusts sensory encoding for future stimuli.

The purpose was to assess whether visual feedback of torque contributes to motor unit (MU) firing rate reduction observed during post-activation potentiation (PAP) of skeletal muscle. From 15 participants 23 MUs were recorded with intramuscular fine-wire electrodes from the tibialis anterior during isometric dorsiflexion contractions at 20% of maximum, with and without both PAP and visual feedback of torque. A 5s maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) was used to induce PAP, and evoked twitch responses were assessed before and after.

The role of beta band phase resetting in audio-visual temporal order judgment.

Cogn Neurodyn

December 2025

Department of Psychology, Graduate School of Humanities, Kobe University, 1-1 Rokkodai- cho, Nada, Kobe, 657-8501 Japan.

Unlabelled: The integration of auditory and visual stimuli is essential for effective language processing and social perception. The present study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying audio-visual (A-V) integration by investigating the temporal dynamics of multisensory regions in the human brain. Specifically, we evaluated inter-trial coherence (ITC), a neural index indicative of phase resetting, through scalp electroencephalography (EEG) while participants performed a temporal-order judgment task that involved auditory (beep, A) and visual (flash, V) stimuli.

Background: Managing postoperative pain and stress response was critical in laparoscopic myomectomy, a procedure for uterine fibroids. Ropivacaine transversus abdominis plane block (RTAPB) may offer enhanced analgesic efficacy and reduced stress responses compared to traditional analgesia.

Methods: This retrospective analysis examined 217 patients undergoing laparoscopic myomectomy at Hankou Hospital of Wuhan from June 2020 to September 2023.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of preemptive hydromorphone analgesia on postoperative delirium and stress response in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, including 167 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Xi'an Central Hospital between June 2021 and November 2023. Patients were categorized into an observation group (n=87) receiving preemptive hydromorphone hydrochloride analgesia and a control group (n=80) without preemptive analgesia.
