In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the bioactivity of rutin, a dietary flavonol naturally found in several plant species. Despite widespread knowledge of its numerous health benefits, such as anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective and cardiovascular effects, industrial use of rutin is still limited due to its low solubility in aqueous media, the characteristic bitter and astringent taste of phenolic compounds and its susceptibility to degradation during processing. To expand its applications and preserve its biological activity, novel encapsulation systems have been developed.

Clarification basins are ubiquitous water treatment units applied across urban water systems. Diverse applications include stormwater systems, stabilization lagoons, equalization, storage and green infrastructure. Residence time (RT), surface overflow rate (SOR) and the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) are readily implemented but are not formulated to optimize basin geometrics because transport dynamics remain unresolved.

Fine particle fraction (FPF) is defined in general terms as the fraction or percentage of the drug mass contained in an aerosol cloud that may be small enough to enter the lungs and exert a clinical effect. An aerodynamic diameter of 5 μm represents the approximate border between "fine" and "coarse" particles, but there is no universally agreed upon definition of FPF in terms of an aerodynamic particle size range. FPF alone does not adequately describe a heterodisperse aerodynamic particle size distribution, and it needs to be combined with another measure or measures indicating the width of the distribution.

A hydrodynamic separator (HS) is a common pre-treatment unit operation (UO) for separating coarser particulate matter (PM). While HS designs have disparate internal geometries, surface areas, and volumes; for a given PM granulometry this study hypothesizes there are limits to PM separation. In this study, a large group of full-scale HS units were tested with physical and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to evaluate HS functionality based on surface overflow rate (SOR), HS geometrics (diameter, height, baffling), PM granulometry, particle size distribution (PSD), turnover volume, hydraulic capacity, and short-circuiting.

The potential of non-invasive ventilation procedures and new minimally invasive techniques has resulted in the research of alternative approaches as the aerosolization for the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The aim of this work was to design two nebulizer prototypes and to evaluate them studying the particle size distribution of the inhaled droplets generated with distilled water and two perfluorocarbons (PFCs). Different experiments were performed with driving pressures of 1⁻3 bar for each compound.
