Background: Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder, and purging behaviors can cause a fatal electrolyte and acid-base imbalance. Routine laboratory testing during inpatient care is essential because these patients often provide inaccurate information about their diet and purging behaviors. However, blood gas analysis for an acid-base evaluation is rarely performed in the psychiatric setting because psychiatrists are not accustomed to evaluating the results.

A digital-movie-based flow colorimetry for pH measurement using a universal indicator has been applied to the end point detection of acid-base titrations. A two-channel flow system of feedback-based flow ratiometry, primarily consisting of two peristaltic pumps, a digital microscope-based detector, and a laptop computer, was constructed; a Visual Basic.NET program written in-house was used for automating the analytical processes.

Forty-five healthy and physically active males participated in two independent experiments. In experiment 1, after a graded exercise test, participants underwent constant work rate cycling efforts (CWR) at 115% of peak power output to assess neuromuscular function (Potentiated twitch) pre- and post-exercise.
