Optogenetic therapy is a promising vision restoration method where light sensitive opsins are introduced to the surviving inner retina following photoreceptor degeneration. The cell type targeted for opsin expression will likely influence the quality of restored vision. However, a like-for-like pre-clinical comparison of visual responses evoked following equivalent opsin expression in the two major targets, ON bipolar (ON BCs) or retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), is absent.

S100A8/A9 Promotes Dendritic Cell-Mediated Th17 Cell Response in Sjögren's Dry Eye Disease by Regulating the Acod1/STAT3 Pathway.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

January 2025

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Retinal Functions and Diseases, Tianjin Branch of National Clinical Research Center for Ocular Disease, Eye Institute and School of Optometry, Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital, Tianjin, China.

Purpose: To investigate the role of S100A8/A9 in the pathogenesis of Sjögren's dry eye disease (SjDED) and explore its potential mechanism of action.

Methods: S100A8/A9 expression was determined by western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Tear secretion, corneal fluorescein staining, and hematoxylin and eosin staining were used to evaluate the effect of paquinimod, a S100A8/A9 inhibitor, on dry eye disease in nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice.

Normalization of Retinal Birefringence Scanning Signals.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Ophthalmic Instrumentation Development Lab, The Wilmer Eye Institute, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Wilmer 233, 600 N. Wolfe St., Baltimore, MD 21287, USA.

Signal amplitudes obtained from retinal scanning depend on numerous factors. Working with polarized light to interrogate the retina, large parts of which are birefringent, is even more prone to artifacts. This article demonstrates the necessity of using normalization when working with retinal birefringence scanning signals in polarization-sensitive ophthalmic instruments.

: Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a genetically complex group of disorders, usually resulting in progressive vision loss due to retinal degeneration. Traditional imaging methods help in structural assessments, but limitations exist in early functional cellular-level detection that are crucial for guiding new therapies. : This review includes a systematic search of PubMed and Google Scholar for studies on advanced imaging techniques for IRDs.

Traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) has been regarded a vision-threatening condition caused by either ocular or blunt/penetrating head trauma, which is characterized by direct or indirect TON. Injury happens during sports, vehicle accidents and mainly in military war and combat exposure. Earlier, we have demonstrated that remote ischemic post-conditioning (RIC) therapy is protective in TON, and here we report that AMPKα1 activation is crucial.
