Cutaneous ureterostomy (CU) is the most simple and safe method of all permanent urinary diversions, but is associated with a risk for stomal obstruction. It is important to appropriately manage hydronephrosis associated with CU. We evaluated the occurrence of stomal obstruction after CU by 99m Tcmercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3) diuretic renography three months after surgery.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of GFR measured using ROI from ultrasound technique in diuretic renography for evaluating postoperative outcomes in infants under one year old with congenital hydronephrosis. A retrospective analysis was conducted on thirty infants who underwent abdominal ultrasound and diuretic renography before and after surgery, obtaining preoperative and postoperative gGFRs and uGFRs (measured using ROI from ultrasound technique) determined using the Gates method and ultrasonic-assisted drawing ROI technique, respectively. A comparative study was performed on total GFR as well as individual kidney GFR before and after intervention.

Challenges of Renal Function Assessment in Breast Cancer Patients Treated With Abemaciclib: A Case Report.

Cureus

August 2024

Department of Medical Oncology, Instituto Português de Oncologia do Porto Francisco Gentil EPE, Porto, PRT.

Abemaciclib, a cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) inhibitor used for hormone-receptor-positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2)-negative breast cancer, can lead to elevated serum creatinine without implications on the true renal function. Although clinical trials have shown no increase in other kidney function biomarkers, this may still represent a challenge in cancer patients. We report a case of a 74-year-old female who presented with creatinine and cystatin-C elevation during treatment with abemaciclib without an equivalent decrease in measured glomerular filtration rate (GFR) with renal scintigraphy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between ultrasound measurements of pyramidal thickness (PT) and parenchymal thickness (ParT) in children with high-grade unilateral hydronephrosis and their differential renal function (DRF) to potentially reduce the necessity for expensive and stressful MAG3 scans.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 71 children, focusing on various ratios of renal measurements to better predict the need for surgical interventions, such as pyeloplasty.
  • The findings suggest that certain ultrasound measurements correlate well with DRF, indicating that they could be used to guide decisions about further imaging and treatment for children at risk of impaired kidney function.

Troubled but in good hands: A qualitative study on patient experiences in diuresis renography examinations.

Radiography (Lond)

August 2024

University Health Care Research Center, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Örebro University, Örebro, Sweden. Electronic address:

Introduction: Diuresis renography is a nuclear medicine examination that can distinguish between obstructive and non-obstructive uropathy. Renography has been investigated before, but not from a patient perspective. The aim of this study was to gain knowledge and understanding of patient experiences with the diuresis renography process.
