Introduction: Physical fitness is an integral part of military readiness, and failure to meet military Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) standards can severely damage or end careers. Postpartum active duty service members experience a drop in PFA scores and passing rates compared to their pre-pregnancy assessments. Each branch recently extended recovery time to 12 months, but more research is required to see if this change alone is enough to return both active duty and reserve component postpartum personnel to their own preconception PFA outcomes (scores, passing rates, and injury rates) and those of a control group of nullpartum female airmen.

Importance: There has been a great deal of interest in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their association with one another, yet their interaction and subsequent associations with long-term outcomes remain poorly understood.

Objective: To compare the long-term outcomes of mTBI that occurred in the context of psychological trauma (peritraumatic context) with mTBI that did not (nonperitraumatic context).

Design, Setting, And Participants: This cohort study of post-9/11 US veterans used data from the Translational Research Center for Traumatic Brain Injury and Stress Disorders (TRACTS) study at the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System, which began in 2009; the current study utilized data from baseline TRACTS visits conducted between 2009 and 2024.

Importance: Fracture-related infection (FRI) is a serious complication following fracture fixation surgery. Current treatment of FRIs entails debridement and 6 weeks of intravenous (IV) antibiotics. Lab data and retrospective clinical studies support use of oral antibiotics, which are less expensive and may have fewer complications than IV antibiotics.

Synaptic-mitochondrial transport: mechanisms in neural adaptation and degeneration.

Mol Cell Biochem

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Trauma and Chemical Poisoning, Daping Hospital, Army Medical University, Chongqing, 400042, China.

Synaptic plasticity is the basis for the proper functioning of the central nervous system. Synapses are the contact points between neurons and are crucial for information transmission, the structure and function of synapses change adaptively based on the different activities of neurons, thus affecting processes such as learning, memory, and neural development and repair. Synaptic activity requires a large amount of energy provided by mitochondria.

Temporal bone CT is an essential technique for diagnosing ossicular chain trauma, and the location of standard observation planes (SOP) is the foundation of imaging diagnosis. The ossicular chain is small in volume, and there are about 11 standard observation planes for ossicular chain diagnosis, so it is a professional and time-consuming task to label SOPs accurately. An automatic annotation method of SOP is proposed.
