Electroencephalogram (EEG) during pinprick stimulation has the potential to unveil neural mechanisms underlying sensorimotor impairments post-stroke. A proof-of-concept study explored event-related peak pinprick amplitude and oscillatory responses in healthy controls and in people with acute and subuacute motor and sensorimotor stroke, their relationship, and to what extent EEG somatosensory responses can predict sensorimotor impairment. In this study, 26 individuals participated, 10 people with an acute and early subacute sensorimotor stroke, 6 people with an acute and early subacute motor stroke, and 10 age-matched controls.

Evaluation of Lower Lip Hypoesthesia Using Trigeminal Somatosensory Evoked Potential After Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy: Retrospective Study.

J Craniofac Surg

January 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Division of Medicine, Interdisciplinary Graduate School, University of Yamanashi, Yamanashi, Japan.

Objective: This study evaluated the degree of paresthesia and recovery of the lower lip and chin in patients who underwent sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) by measuring the preoperative and postoperative trigeminal somatosensory evoked potential (TSEP).

Study Design: Thirty-seven patients with skeletal class II and III malocclusion who underwent SSRO were included. TSEP was measured at 7 points: preoperatively and 1 week, 1, 3, 6, 12, and 18 months postoperatively.

Prone Transpsoas Lumbar Interbody Fusion for Degenerative Disc Disease.

JBJS Essent Surg Tech

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, Center for Neuroscience and Spine, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, Washington.

Background: Prone transpsoas lumbar interbody fusion (PTP) is a newer technique to treat various spinal disc pathologies. PTP is a variation of lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) that is performed with the patient prone rather than in the lateral decubitus position. This approach offers similar benefits of lateral spinal surgery, which include less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and quicker recovery compared with traditional open spine surgery.

Aging negatively impacts central nervous system function; however, the cellular impact of aging in the peripheral nervous system remains poorly understood. Aged individuals are more likely to experience increased pain and slower recovery after trauma. Such injury can damage vulnerable peripheral axons of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons resulting in somatosensory dysfunction.

Background: Posterior laminectomy is a standard treatment for thoracic ossification of the ligamentum flavum (TOLF), but it often leads to neurological deterioration during surgery. This study aimed to reduce iatrogenic neurological deterioration by using an S8 navigation system combined with an ultrasonic osteotome for three-dimensional real-time dynamic visualization decompression.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent laminectomy and internal fixation for TOLF in our centre from January 2016 to January 2023.
