The development of self-elastic sponges with enhanced hemostatic and antibacterial properties to treat noncompressible hemorrhage and facilitate wound healing remains challenging. Herein, we prepared a chitosan sponge reinforced with lauric acid-modified quaternized chitosan (LQC) and attapulgite, features a porous structure, high self-elasticity, and rapid shape recovery. The incorporation of LQC conferred the sponge with an enhanced capacity to promote the adhesion, aggregation, and activation of blood cells, and resistance to infection by Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; the incorporation of attapulgite enhanced the hydrophilicity and mechanical strength of the sponge, and its ability to activate the intrinsic and extrinsic coagulation pathways.

This study aimed to investigate the performance differences of low-sodium myofibrillar protein (MP) gels substituted by different chloride salt mixtures from the perspective of gelation process. The results revealed that low-sodium MP substituted by KCl/CaCl exhibited higher turbidity and particle size at 40 % substitution, and formed protein aggregates earlier at 53 °C. During the gelation process, KCl/CaCl increased the extent of cross-linking as the substitution level increased from 10 % to 40 %, which was prone to forming final gels with poor palatability.

Matrix proteins play important roles in shell formation by regulating the assembly of organic matrix and minerals. Here, we obtained a new matrix protein (hicraqin) from Hyriopsis cumingii. The amino acid sequence of hicraqin contains multiple aggregated (Gly)n (n > 2) residues, a feature unique to silk-like matrix proteins.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a kind of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by beta-amyloid deposition and neurofibrillary tangles and is also the main cause of dementia. According to statistics, the incidence of AD is constantly increasing, bringing a great burden to individuals and society. Nonetheless, there is no cure for AD, and the available drugs are very limited apart from cholinesterase inhibitors and N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) antagonists, which merely alleviate symptoms without delaying the progression of the disease.
