Background: With the worldwide spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection, it is becoming increasingly urgent to develop a vaccine to prevent COVID-19, as well as effective drugs to treat it.
Methods: This article is based on a selective literature search in PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov, followed by an assessment of the ongoing clinical trials that were revealed by the search.

The lyophilized aqueous crude extract (LACE) from leaves of Persea americana (Lauraceae) species showed a strong inhibitory effect on acyclovir (ACG(r)4 and dlsp TK mutants) and PAA-resistant (PAA(r)5 mutant) herpes simplex virus. After exhaustive washing of LACE using methanol, the soluble fraction was chromatographed on a reverse-phase column giving 11 fractions that were revealed by thin-layer chromatography. Analysis of the antiviral effect of the fractions showed the extract contained compounds that were able to inhibit extracellular virus and the replication of resistant acyclovir HSV.

In the epidermis and dermis approximately 30 min after external application KOP concentrations of 1 to 3% of the applied total quantity are achieved, which remain nearly unchanged even after longer penetration time. In addition to references for therapy derivable from this the results permit to draw conclusions about drug resorption that can be proved in animal experiments under in-vivo conditions.

Since 1973 tromantadine HCl (in the following briefly called tromantadine) has been offered as a topical virustatic agent. Only three years later, in 1976, there were the first reports of allergic contact dermatitis due to tromantadine.

Therapy with adenine arabinoside-5'-monophosphate (ARA AMP) was employed with a good virustatic effect. Suppression of bone marrow and a possible immunological suppression was seen at low dose level already.
