Multifunctional starch-based conductive hydrogels for smart sensors and flexible supercapacitors.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

School of Materials Science and Physics, China University of Mining and Technology, Xuzhou 221116, Jiangsu, China. Electronic address:

In order to overcome harsh working environments and meet eco-friendly demands, the development of environmentally tolerant and recyclable hydrogels is necessary. Herein, multifunctional conductive hydrogel was successfully constructed by introducing starch into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/glycerin (Gly)/lithium chloride (LiCl) hydrogel. Starch is rich in active sites (-OH groups) that provide a variety of physical interactions for the construction of polymer hydrogels.

In a previous publication, we determined the kinetics and equilibrium for the sorption of propylparaben to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In this work, we extend that study to investigate the sorption of methylparaben and propylparaben on tubing surfaces made of PVC and fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) using molecular dynamics simulations. The simulations suggest the mechanism of sorption to be adsorption.

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore, 1 Engineering Drive 2, 117576, Singapore; NUS Environmental Research Institute, National University of Singapore, 5A Engineering Drive 1, 117411, Singapore. Electronic address:

Drinking water distribution systems face a multifaceted emerging concern, including in situ microplastic (MP) generation, chemical leaching from plastic pipes, and the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs). This study investigated the co-release of MPs and chemical leachates from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes exposed to different chlorine concentrations on a lab scale, as well as the subsequent formation of DBP. Results highlighted significant evidence of PVC-derived dissolved organic matter (PVC-DOM) and microplastic (PVC-MP) leaching at higher chlorine concentrations.

Preventing bacterial infection and accelerating wound closure are critical for wound healing. Herein, a novel multifunctional polyvinyl alcohol-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVA-PVP) microneedle (MN) patch embedded with enzyme-like activity (CoFe)(S) (CFS) nanoparticles and metal ions (Co and Fe) was systematically synthesized for the management of bacteria-infected wounds. CFS regulated redox homeostasis and achieved bacterial eradication while concomitantly alleviating oxidative damage.

The interactions of nanoplastics (NPs) with natural organic matters (NOMs) dominate the environmental fate of both substances and the organic carbon cycle. Their binding and aggregation mechanisms at the molecular level remain elusive due to the high structural complexity of NOMs and aged NPs. Molecular modeling was used to understand the detailed dynamic interaction mechanism between NOMs and NPs.
