Sulfoconjugation is the major pathway for thyroid hormone (TH) metabolism, converting T4 to inactive metabolites, T4S, rT3S, and T3S in fetus, via sulfotransferases (SULT) and type 3 deiodinase in gestation. Consistent with high production rate of T4S and rT3S, there are high serum sulfated iodothyronine analogs, including T4S, T3S, rT3S, and 3,3'-T2S (T2S), in ovine and human fetal and preterm infants. Fetal TH metabolic pathways predict T2S as the major TH metabolite in the fetus.

This article reviews the current state of understanding of reproductive pheromones in amphibians, focusing mainly on the purification and characterization of peptide pheromones in newts of the genus Cynops, molecular cloning of cDNAs encoding the pheromone molecules, and hormonal control of secretion of these pheromones. Pheromones that attract sexually developed female Cynops pyrrhogaster and C. ensicauda newts were isolated from the male abdominal glands.

Pneumadin (PNM) is a decapeptide, originally isolated from mammalian lungs, which exerts a potent stimulating effect on arginine-vasopressin (AVP) release, thereby evoking an antidiuretic effect. We have established a specific radioimmunoassay (RIA) method for rat PNM determination, the sensitivity of which is sufficient for measuring tissue content of the peptide. Moreover, raised antibodies have been used for the immunocytochemical detection of PNM in several rat organs.

Leptin is an adipose tissue-secreted hormone that actively participates in the regulation of energy homeostasis. Besides this principal role, leptin has been implicated in a large variety of neuroendocrine, paracrine, and autocrine actions involved in the regulation of reproductive function in both experimental animals and humans. Although the participation of leptin in female reproduction is well established, any role in male reproductive function is at best tenuous.

The interaction of PYY and VIP was studied in stripped and intact rat jejunum preparations mounted in Ussing chambers. PYY decreased basal Isc in intact as well as in stripped jejunum. Stripping was necessary to evidence a stimulation of basal Isc by VIP.
