Background: Zika (ZIKV) is a virus transmitted by mosquitoes that can cause Guillain- Barré syndrome and congenital malformations like microcephaly. Given its explosive resurgence and the resulting epidemics in 2016, the search for effective antiviral drugs has become absolutely necessary.
Methods: In this study, we examined the potential of naphthoquinone derivatives that have a sulfonamide or sulfonate group to inhibit ZIKV replication in primary cultured neurons and in Vero cells.

Background: Cluster randomized trials, which often enroll a small number of clusters, can benefit from constrained randomization, selecting a final randomization scheme from a set of known, balanced randomizations. Previous literature has addressed the suitability of adjusting the analysis for the covariates that were balanced in the design phase when the outcome is continuous or binary. Here we extended this work to time-to-event outcomes by comparing two model-based tests and a newly derived permutation test.

The distribution and abundance of ectothermic mosquitoes are strongly affected by temperature, but mechanisms remain unexplored. We describe the effect of temperature on the transcriptome of Anopheles stephensi, an invasive vector of human malaria. Adult females were maintained across a range of mean temperatures (20 °C, 24 °C and 28 °C), with daily fluctuations of +5 °C and -4 °C at each mean temperature.

The continual use of synthetic insecticides to control mosquito larvae has severe implications for human health and the ecosystem, highlighting the need for alternative natural insecticides. Macroalgae may be a good alternative because of their biologically active metabolites with distinctive chemical structures that have been reported for their insecticidal properties. The study aimed to investigate the potential of different extracts from Jania rubens (Linnaeus) J.

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) certified Taiwan as being malaria-free in 1965, there are reports of a few imported cases each year by travelers who visit malaria-endemic areas. This study examined the epidemiology of imported malaria cases in Taiwan from 2014 to 2020, utilizing national surveillance data from the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control. Malaria cases were confirmed through the application of standard laboratory methods.
