Introduction: Patients with cerebral hemorrhage often require a tracheal intubation to protect the airway and maintain oxygenation. Due to the use of analgesic and sedative drugs during endotracheal intubation and the opening of the glottis may easily cause aspiration pneumonia. Ceftriaxone is a semi-synthetic third-generation cephalosporin with strong antimicrobial activity against most gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Temocillin efficacy against AmpC β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales: a relevant alternative to cefepime?

J Antimicrob Chemother

December 2024

Infectious Diseases Unit, CHU de La Réunion, Saint-Pierre, La Réunion, 97410, France.

Introduction: Temocillin is a semi-synthetic β-lactam with a narrow spectrum but high stability against hydrolysis by β-lactamases, including AmpC. Despite its favourable properties, data regarding its clinical value in the treatment of AmpC β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ABPE) infections are scarce. Most recent guidelines do not include temocillin in the therapeutic strategy for ABPE infection.

Penicillin G acylase (PGA) serves as a critical biocatalyst for the hydrolysis of penicillin G, yielding 6-aminopenicillanic acid, a vital precursor for β-lactam semi-synthetic antibiotics. The catalytic efficiency of PGA, however, remains suboptimal in native Escherichia coli strains. To improve this, E.

Agents Targeting the Bacterial Cell Wall as Tools to Combat Gram-Positive Pathogens.

Molecules

August 2024

Department of Analytical Biochemistry, Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University, Gronostajowa St. 7, 30-348 Cracow, Poland.

The cell wall is an indispensable element of bacterial cells and a long-known target of many antibiotics. Penicillin, the first discovered beta-lactam antibiotic inhibiting the synthesis of cell walls, was successfully used to cure many bacterial infections. Unfortunately, pathogens eventually developed resistance to it.
