Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Induce Brain Edema Around Intracerebral Hematoma via ERK-Mediated Regulation of MMP9 and AQP4.

Transl Stroke Res

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, 74 Linjiang Rd, Yuzhong, Chongqing, 400010, China.

Perihematomal edema (PHE) significantly aggravates secondary brain injury in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), yet its detailed mechanisms remain elusive. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are known to exacerbate neurological deficits and worsen outcomes after stroke. This study explores the potential role of NETs in the pathogenesis of brain edema following ICH.

Patients with cirrhosis have high systemic inflammation (TNFα, CRP, and IL-6) that is associated with poor outcomes. These biomarkers need continuous non-invasive monitoring, which is difficult with blood. We studied the AWARE sweat-sensor to measure these in passively expressed sweat in healthy people (N = 12) and cirrhosis (N = 32, 10 outpatients/22 inpatients) for 3 days.

Prostate-specific antigen testing in the United States during 2008-2022 in relation to the US preventive services task force recommendations.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Public Health, College of Life Sciences, Brigham Young University, 2063 Life Sciences Building, Provo, UT, 84602, USA.

The prevalence of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing has consistently fallen for several years. This study explored how the decreasing trend differs by selected variables and reasons for taking the PSA test. Analyses involved men, aged 40 years or older, who completed the Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey in even number years from 2008 through 2022.

The serum uric acid-to-creatinine ratio (UCR) may be a simple method for assessing xanthine oxidase overactivation, which may contribute to an increase in serum uric acid production and oxidative stress. In this study, we investigated the nonlinear association between the UCR and long-term mortality in patients with hypertension. Data were acquired from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database, and a total of 11,346 patients with hypertension were included.

Resolvin D1 (RvD1) is an endogenous anti-inflammatory mediator that modulates the inflammatory response and promotes inflammation resolution. RvD1 has demonstrated neuroprotective effects in various central nervous system contexts; however, its role in the pathophysiological processes of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and the potential protective mechanisms when combined with exercise rehabilitation remain unclear. A mouse model of ICH was established using collagenase, and treatment with RvD1 combined with three weeks of exercise rehabilitation significantly improved neurological deficits, muscle strength, learning, and memory in ICH mice while reducing anxiety-like behavior.
