Purpose: It is not known whether temporal changes in childhood cancer therapy have reduced risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMNs) of the central nervous system (CNS), a frequently fatal late effect of cancer therapy.

Methods: Five-year survivors of primary childhood cancers diagnosed between 1970-1999 in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study with a subsequent CNS SMN were identified. Cumulative incidence rates and standardized incidence ratios (SIR) were compared among survivors diagnosed between 1970-1979 (N = 6223), 1980-1989 (N = 9680), and 1990-1999 (N = 8999).

Background And Purpose: This study investigates the practicality and utility of the "outline sign," which refers to the thin curvilinear hyperenhancing line that may be seen along the margin of a meningioma on a spin-echo postcontrast T1-weighted image. For cases in which the differential diagnosis may include other tumors, visualization of the outline sign may help to increase the diagnostic confidence for a meningioma. Therefore, in the temporal bone region such as the cerebellopontine angle or jugular foramen, where differential considerations may include a schwannoma or paraganglioma, we additionally investigated whether the outline sign may be observed in these nonmeningioma lesions.

Middle ear biofilm and sudden deafness - a light and transmission electron microscopy study.

Front Neurol

December 2024

Department of Surgical Sciences, Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.

Background: There still exists controversy about whether the healthy human middle ear mucosa is sterile or if it may harbor a diverse microbiome. Considering the delicacy of the human round window membrane (RWM), different mechanisms may exist for avoiding inner ear pathogen invasion causing sensorineural deafness. We re-analyzed archival human RWMs using light and transmission electron microscopy after decalcification to determine if bacteria are present in clinically normal human middle ears.

Methods: Following PRISMA statement recommendations, 383 abstracts were screened independently by two authors. Inclusion criteria were articles of human patients affected by TB-MEP; English or Italian language; availability of the abstract articles unrelated to TB-MEP, guidelines and systematic reviews were excluded.
