Background: To investigate the changes of b2-microglobulin and electrolyte in different stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the value of evaluating prognosis.

Methods: A retrospective study was undertaken on 120 patients diagnosed with COPD and treated at our respiratory department between February 1, 2020, and January 31, 2023. These patients were classified into three groups based on the GOLD classification: mild (FEV1 > 81%), moderate (51% < FEV1 ≤ 80%), and severe (FEV1 ≤ 50%).

Biodiesel presents a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, yet traditional homogeneous catalysts like sodium and potassium hydroxide face challenges with separation and reuse. Calcium oxide (CaO) is an effective heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production, but its chemical instability under reaction conditions restricts its long-term performance. This study introduces MOF-mediated synthesis (MOFMS) of heterogeneous catalysts, specifically CaO@ZnO and ZnO@CaO nanocomposites, from inexpensive and non-toxic metal salts and linkers in water.

Hyperkalemia, characterized by elevated serum potassium levels, poses significant health risks, including life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. The management of hyperkalemia has evolved, incorporating calcium polystyrene sulfonate (CPS) and newer agents such as sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) and patiromer alongside traditional treatments. This review provides a comprehensive examination of current management strategies for hyperkalemia, focusing on the comparative effectiveness, safety profiles, and patient preferences concerning CPS, SZC, and patiromer.

Objective: Gain-of-function variants in the KCNT1 gene, which encodes a sodium-activated potassium ion channel, drive severe early onset developmental epileptic encephalopathies including epilepsy of infancy with migrating focal seizures and sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy. No therapy provides more than sporadic or incremental improvement. Here, we report suppression of seizures in a genetic mouse model of KCNT1 epilepsy by reducing Kcnt1 transcript with divalent small interfering RNA (siRNA), an emerging variant of oligonucleotide technology developed for the central nervous system.

Plants produce defensive toxins to deter herbivores. In response, some specialized herbivores evolved resistance and even the capacity to sequester toxins, affecting interactions at higher trophic levels. Here, we test the hypothesis that potential natural enemies of specialized herbivores are differentially affected by plant toxins depending on their level of adaptation to the plant-herbivore system.
