Temporal metacognition: Direct readout or mental construct? The case of introspective reaction time.

J Exp Psychol Gen

January 2025

Centre de Recherche en Psychologie et Neurosciences, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Aix-Marseille Universite.

Deciphering whether and which mental processes are accessible for metacognitive judgments is a key question to understand higher cognitive functions. Paralleling the crucial role of reaction times (RT) for unraveling the temporal sequence of mental processes, a comparable chronometric approach can be employed at the second-order level through introspective reaction times (iRT) measures. Although mean iRT correlate with mean RT, suggesting good metacognitive abilities, this would not necessarily imply a direct readout of the duration of the underlying processes as participants may instead rely on inferences based on other salient, nontemporal, cues.

Acute stress disorder (ASD) is a transient psychiatric disorder that may arise subsequent to abrupt, extreme trauma exposure, and serves as a reliable indicator for the subsequent development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Bryant, 2011; Battle, 2013). It exhibits rapid progression in the aftermath of trauma and persists for a duration of days or weeks (not exceeding one month), manifesting symptoms of dissociation, re-experiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal (Bielas et al., 2018).

Intelligent antibacterial coatings based on sensitive response and periodic fast drug release for long-term defense against corrosion induced by sulfate-reducing bacteria.

J Colloid Interface Sci

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Shaanxi Province Key Laboratory of Corrosion and Protection, Xi'an University of Technology, Xi'an 710048 PR China.

Pitting corrosion caused by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) significantly shortens the lifespan of metallic pipelines. Antibacterial coatings containing S-responsive drug-loaded nanocontainers represent a promising method to mitigate SRB corrosion. However, the challenge of balancing rapid bactericide release with continuous antibacterial effect limits their practical application.

Studying attention to IPCC climate change maps with mobile eye-tracking.

PLoS One

January 2025

Faculty of Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and the Study of Religion, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, München, Germany.

Many visualisations used in the climate communication field aim to present the scientific models of climate change to the public. However, relatively little research has been conducted on how such data are visually processed, particularly from a behavioural science perspective. This study examines trends in visual attention to climate change predictions in world maps using mobile eye-tracking while participants engage with the visualisations.

Harvesting the energy from the interaction between hygroscopic materials and atmospheric water can generate green and clean energy. However, the ion diffusion process of moisture-induced dissociation leads to the disappearance of the ion concentration gradient gradually, and there is still a lack of moisture-based power generation devices with truly continuous operation, especially the duration of the current output still needs to be extended. Here, we propose a design for reconstructing the ion concentration gradient by coupling photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction with hydrovoltaic effect, to report a moisture-enabled electric generator (MEG) with continuous current output.
