Chemomechanical Self-Oscillatory Microgel Motility in Stratified Chemical Media.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Dynamic Colloidal Systems Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, 247667, India.

The design of chemomechanical self-oscillators, which execute oscillations in the presence of constant stimuli lacking periodicity, is a step toward the development of autonomous and interactive soft robotic systems. This work presents a simple design of prolonged chemomechanical oscillatory movement in a microgel system capable of buoyant motility within stratified chemical media containing spatially localized sinking and floating stimuli. Three design elements are developed: a stimuli-responsive membranized calcium alginate microgel, a Percoll density gradient for providing stratified antagonistic chemical media, and transduction of microgel particle size actuation into buoyant motility via membrane-mediated displacement of the Percoll media.

Gastro retentive drug delivery systems (GRDDS) have gained immense popularity as they reduce dosing frequency, improve bioavailability, and enhance patient compliance. Herein, a plant-based, controlled swelling, and pH-sensitive GRDDS based on Aloe vera hydrogel and cellulose was developed for the sustained release of levofloxacin (LEVO). The properties of five various floating tablet formulations including dynamic swelling, pH-responsiveness, hardness, friability, drug release, and buoyant time were evaluated.

This study evaluates deployment strategies for artificial oxygenation devices to mitigate coastal hypoxia, particularly in mariculture regions. Focusing on a typical mariculture region in the coastal waters of China, we examined the combined effects of topography, hydrodynamics, and biogeochemical processes. A high-resolution three-dimensional physical-biogeochemical coupled model, validated against observational data from three summer cruises in 2020, accurately captured key drivers of hypoxia.

Temperature-dependent akinete formation strategies of the harmful cyanobacterium Dolichospermum circinale.

Harmful Algae

November 2024

Human and Eco-Care Center, Department of Environmental Health Science, Konkuk University, Seoul 05029, South Korea; Department of Environmental Health Science, Konkuk University, Seoul 05029, South Korea. Electronic address:

Cyanobacteria from the orders Nostocales and certain Stigonematales form akinetes, spore-like dormant cells that allow them to survive adverse environmental conditions. Temperature is known to be one of the key factors affecting akinete formation, but there is currently little known about akinete formation during cell growth over a wide range of temperature conditions and its relation to the overall survival strategy of cyanobacteria. Therefore, in the current study, we conducted a temperature-controlled experiment to analyze the akinete formation of a harmful cyanobacterium Dolichospurmum circinale using a growth chamber.

Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) consist of buoyant rafts that support the growth of macrophytes on waterbodies. The long-term performance of these rafts depends on their buoyancy and resistance to weathering. Here, we present a protocol for establishing low-cost FTWs for large-scale wastewater reclamation by integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern engineering principles.
