Intra-erythrocytic inclusion bodies were seen in Giemsa-stained smears of peripheral blood from mice infected with Babesia microti. These bodies, which were probably the pyknotic remnants of dead protozoa, increased as parasitaemia fell and the animal recovered. It is suggested that a soluble mediator liberated by cells of the host during infection penetrates the red blood-cell and leads to degeneration of the parasite.

The spleen plays a dual role of immune response and the filtration of red blood cells (RBC), the latter function being performed within the unique microcirculatory architecture of the red pulp. The red pulp filters and eliminates senescent and pathological RBC and can expell intra-erythrocytic rigid bodies through the so-called pitting mechanism. The loss of splenic function increases the risk of infections, thromboembolism, and hematological malignancies.

Natural killer (NK) cells lyse virus-infected cells and transformed cells through polarized delivery of lytic effector molecules into target cells. We have shown that NK cells lyse Plasmodium falciparum-infected red blood cells (iRBC) via antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC). A high frequency of adaptive NK cells, with elevated intrinsic ADCC activity, in people chronically exposed to malaria transmission is associated with reduced parasitemia and resistance to disease.
