Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the combined effects of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on pregnancy outcomes, aiming to determine if the combination increases risks compared to having either condition alone.
  • Using data from over 281,000 women who gave birth in Sweden from 1997 to 2015, the researchers analyzed various maternal and neonatal complications through logistic regression.
  • The findings indicate that having GDM presents a higher risk for adverse outcomes than PCOS alone, and there was no significant interaction between the two conditions suggesting that PCOS does not increase the risk beyond GDM alone.

Advanced medullary thyroid carcinoma uncovered by persistently elevated procalcitonin in a patient with COVID-19.

Endocrinol Diabetes Metab Case Rep

July 2024

Department of Medicine and Aging Sciences, Center for Advanced Studies and Technology (CAST), G.d'Annunzio University Chieti-Pescara, Chieti, Italy.

Summary: We report the case of an 88-year-old man hospitalized for COVID-19 with persistently very high procalcitonin (proCt) levels despite infection resolution. Since proCt is an adjunct tumor marker in the diagnosis of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), serum calcitonin (Ct) was also measured showing very high levels. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed the presence of a thyroid mass and neck ultrasound revealed a solid isoechoic, inhomogeneous, 50 mm nodule in the right thyroid lobe, extended into the mediastinum.

Copper impairs the intestinal barrier integrity in Wilson disease.

Metabolism

September 2024

Institute of Molecular Toxicology and Pharmacology, Helmholtz Center Munich, German Research Center for Environmental Health, Neuherberg, Germany; Technical University Munich, Institute of Toxicology and Environmental Hygiene, Munich, Germany. Electronic address:

In Wilson disease (WD), liver copper (Cu) excess, caused by mutations in the ATPase Cu transporting beta (ATP7B), has been extensively studied. In contrast, in the gastrointestinal tract, responsible for dietary Cu uptake, ATP7B malfunction is poorly explored. We therefore investigated gut biopsies from WD patients and compared intestines from two rodent WD models and from human ATP7B knock-out intestinal cells to their respective wild-type controls.

The patient was successfully identified and treated by the ED nurse practitioner (NP) with aspiration of the corpus cavernosum. Priapism is a persistent penile erection that continues for an extended time.

Chagas disease (ChD), a Neglected Tropical Disease, has witnessed a transformative epidemiological landscape characterized by a trend of reduction in prevalence, shifting modes of transmission, urbanization, and globalization. Historically a vector-borne disease in rural areas of Latin America, effective control measures have reduced the incidence in many countries, leading to a demographic shift where most affected individuals are now adults. However, challenges persist in regions like the Gran Chaco, and emerging oral transmission in the Amazon basin adds complexity.
