Distribution, sources, contamination, and risks of toxic metals in Zijiang River, a typical tributary of the midstream of the Yangtze River in China.

J Environ Sci (China)

July 2025

State Key Laboratory of Water Environment Simulation, School of Environment, Beijing Normal University, Beijing 100875, China. Electronic address:

Excessive concentrations of toxic metals are a global threat to aquatic systems. Taking a typical tributary (Zijiang River, ZR) of the midstream of the Yangtze River as the research area, the concentration distribution and chemical fractions occurrence characteristics of five toxic metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) were analyzed, their potential sources were explored, and their contamination and ecological risk was assessed. In the surface waters and sediments, there were high concentrations of Zn, a low concentration of Cd, and small spatial differences in concentration among the upstream, midstream, and downstream.

APOL1 Modulates Renin-Angiotensin System.

Biomolecules

December 2024

Department of Medicine and Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, Zucker School of Medicine, Hempstead, NY 11549, USA.

Patients carrying APOL1 risk alleles (G1 and G2) have a higher risk of developing Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS); we hypothesized that escalated levels of miR193a contribute to kidney injury by activating renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the APOL1 milieus. Differentiated podocytes (DPDs) stably expressing vector (V/DPD), G0 (G0/DPDs), G1 (G1/DPDs), and G2 (G2/DPDs) were evaluated for renin, Vitamin D receptor (VDR), and podocyte molecular markers (PDMMs, including WT1, Podocalyxin, Nephrin, and Cluster of Differentiation [CD]2 associated protein [AP]). G0/DPDs displayed attenuated renin but an enhanced expression of VDR and Wilms Tumor [WT]1, including other PDMMs; in contrast, G1/DPDs and G2/DPDs exhibited enhanced expression of renin but decreased expression of VDR and WT1, as well as other PDMMs (at both the protein and mRNA levels).

Enhancing soil quality in soybean cultivation: Mycorrhizal technology combined with intercropping under high cadmium stress.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

December 2024

Heilongjiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Ecological Restoration and Resource Utilization for Cold Region, Heilongjiang University, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province 150080, China; Engineering Research Center of Agricultural Microbiology Technology, Ministry of Education, Heilongjiang University, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province 150080, China. Electronic address:

Cadmium (Cd) contamination presents a serious challenges for sustainable agriculture. This study evaluated the combined impact of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation and intercropping with Solanum nigrum on soil microbial diversity, enzyme activity, and environmental factors in soybean cultivation under high Cd stress. The combined treatment effectively reduced bioavailable Cd in soil, with the acid-soluble Cd fraction at 19.

Unveiling the structural properties of three pectin fractions variation affecting pulp browning during peach processing.

Carbohydr Polym

February 2025

Institute of Food Science and Technology, CAAS, Key Laboratory of Agri-Products Processing, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Beijing 100193, China. Electronic address:

Peach ripening accompanying by processing browning exacerbated has not been clarified in perspective of pectin fractions structural variation. This study investigated pectin fractions of water-soluble (WSP), trans-cyclohexane-1,2-diaminetetraacetic acid-soluble (CSP) and sodium carbonate-soluble (NSP) pectin in peach with different ripening times (24, 48, 72 h) and pretreatments (cold shock, CaCl2, the combination) effect on pulp browning in processing. Results showed that extended ripening time increases browning index and rate, along with increased reactive oxygen species levels, polyphenol oxidase and pectinase activities, and the structural of the pectin fractions.

Water exchange frequency affects the fractions of sulfur and heavy metals in mariculture sediments.

Mar Environ Res

November 2024

CAS Key Laboratory of Coastal Zone Environmental Processes and Ecological Remediation, Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yantai, 264003, China; State Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Land and Sea Ecological Governance and Systematic Regulation, Shandong Academy for Environmental Planning, Jinan, 250000, China. Electronic address:

Water exchange is a key step in mariculture activities. However, the impact of water exchange frequency (WEF) on the environmental behavior of sulfur and heavy metals is not well understood. In this study, the migration and transformation of sulfur and heavy metals in mariculture sediments under different WEFs were investigated.
