A 30-year-old woman presented with multiple pruritic raised skin lesions at the proximal part of her left arm for the past 15 years. At the age of 15, the patient noticed red nodules accompanied with severe pruritus over the arm, which started to spread and involved the dorsal aspect of her scapula (Figure 1). They had been increasing in number during the past 15 years.

A haemorrhagic protein toxin (SA-HT) was isolated and purified from the spine extract of the Indian venomous butterfish, S. argus Linn, by two step ion exchange chromatography. The toxin was homogeneous in native and SDS-PAGE gel.

Intraperitoneal administration of the ethanol extract of Grewia bicolor root (300 mg/kg) to rats in early pregnancy (+1-4 days) did not affect the number of conception sites, but significantly increased resorption. In late pregnancy (+19-20 days), the extract (300 mg/kg) did not affect duration of the gestation period; however, 400 mg/kg was lethal to all mother rats. The active compound, apparently a peptide, exerted a serotonin-like effect on rat uterus, rat fundus and rabbit jejunum.
