High-dose radiation exposure results in gastrointestinal (GI) acute radiation syndrome identified by the destruction of mucosal layer, intestinal epithelial barrier dysfunction, and aberrant inflammatory responses. In addition, radiation causes gut microbiome dysbiosis characterized by diminished microbial diversity, reduction in the abundance of beneficial commensal bacteria, and the spread of bacterial pathogens that trigger the recruitment of immune cells and the production of pro-inflammatory factors that lead to further GI tissue damage. Currently, there are no FDA-approved countermeasures that can treat radiation-induced GI injury.

The dose of X-ray irradiation is commonly measured by point assessment with an ionization chamber dosimeter. However, to achieve spatially accurate delivery of X-ray to avoid the exposure to normal tissues, an accurate imaging method for spatially and quantitatively detecting exposure is required. Herein, we present a novel method to visualize X-ray exposure using low-field dynamic nuclear polarization magnetic resonance imaging (DNP-MRI) with nitroxyl radical tempol as the chemical dosimeter.

Its impact is significant as it can feed on more than 300 host plants, rendering affected fruits and vegetable crops unsellable or of lower quality. Various chemical and biological methods have been used to control this pest, with varying degrees of success.

High-dose irradiation can trigger numerous endothelial dysfunctions, including apoptosis, the overexpression of adhesion molecules, and alteration of adherens junctions. Altogether, these endothelial dysfunctions contribute to the development of tissue inflammation and organ damage. The development of endothelial dysfunctions may depend on protein phosphorylation by various protein kinases, but the possible role of protein kinase A (PKA) has not been investigated so far, and efficient compounds able to protect the endothelium from irradiation effects are needed.

Radiation therapy used in the treatment of cancer causes skin damage, and no method of care has been established thus far. Recently, it has become clear that sericin derived from silkworm cocoons has moisturizing and antioxidant functions. In addition, green cocoon-derived sericin, which is rich in flavonoids, may have enhanced functions.
