Review of femoroacetabular impingement syndrome.

J Hip Preserv Surg

December 2024

Hip and Knee Adult Reconstruction Department, Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación Luis Guillermo Ibarra, Calzada México-Xochimilco No. 289 Colonia Arenal de Guadalupe Delegación, Tlalpan C.P., Ciudad de México 14389, México.

Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is a common condition of the hip that can cause significant damage to the joint, leading to degeneration and osteoarthritis. FAIS constitutes an abnormal and dynamic contact between the femoral head-neck junction and the acetabular rim, resulting from altered bone morphology at one or both sites. Repetitive trauma at the site of impingement generates progressive damage to the acetabular labrum, chondrolabral junction, and articular cartilage.

Article Synopsis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that complicates surgical planning, particularly for hip surgery, necessitating thorough preoperative evaluations of cardiovascular and pulmonary health.
  • Collaboration with rheumatologists is essential to adjust medications for controlling RA activity before surgery, considering factors like soft tissue weakness and bone deformities.
  • Postoperatively, RA patients require careful monitoring and more intensive rehabilitation due to their increased risk of complications, making a multidisciplinary approach vital for successful outcomes.

Effects of bariatric surgery on hyperuricemia and gout: a systematic review of the literature.

Updates Surg

November 2024

Department of Surgery, General Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Unit, Santa Maria Nuova Hospital, Piazza Santa Maria Nuova, 50122, Florence, Italy.

Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, and it is due to the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the articular and extra-articular tissues. Body mass index is strongly correlated with elevated serum uric acid levels and gout is often associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Recommended nonpharmacological treatments for hyperuricemia and gout include dietary modifications and weight loss.

A Modified Surgical Approach to the Distal Humerus: The Triceps Bundle Technique.

Strategies Trauma Limb Reconstr

August 2024

Department of Orthopaedics, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Unlabelled: This paper describes a modification of the traditional fascial tongue surgical approach to the distal humerus. In particular, we describe the reflection and utilisation of radial and ulnar triceps bundles to allow complete visualisation of the distal humerus. This extensile technique allows access to the entirety of the distal humerus and provides excellent visualisation to the operating surgeon.

Background And Objective: Correct mechanical limb alignment is crucial in Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) and is particularly difficult to achieve when the knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is associated with an Extra-Articular Deformity (EAD). Our objective is to present a surgical option in cases of severe knee arthritis associated with an EAD (indications, mechanical planning and surgical technique), pros and cons and discuss the results with this one-stage technique.

Material And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all cases of severe KOA associated with EAD treated surgically in our institution from 2010-2016.
