Background Research on nursing care needs (NCNs) for critically ill patients at discharge is scarce. This study aimed to quantify and compare NCNs at discharge between patients with severe COVID-19 and septic shock and to identify factors associated with higher NCNs. Methodology We retrospectively analyzed data from the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2023, on patients requiring ventilators in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Background: Hyperkalemia, the buildup of serum potassium to levels >6 mEq L, has been a recognized complication of combat injuries such as acute kidney injury since World War II. Currently, renal replacement therapy (RRT) serves as the standard of care for hyperkalemic patients who fail to respond to medical management. However, RRT is difficult to administer in combat settings, and the time between evacuation and RRT is critical in preventing post-traumatic hyperkalemia.

Introduction: This study aimed to identify characteristics associated with survival during and post Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) therapy, in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: A retrospective observational study on 94 consecutive patients with confirmed COVID-19 induced ARDS supported by ECMO was carried out 49/94 (52.7%) patients survived to hospital discharge.

Importance: Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) remains a significant problem following cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Various strategies are proposed to attenuate CSA-AKI, including extracorporeal blood purification (EBP), but little is known about the effect of EBP through an acrylonitrile-sodium methallylsulfonate/polyethyleneimine membrane during CPB.

Objective: To determine whether the use of an EBP device in a nonemergent cardiac surgery population reduces CSA-AKI after CPB.

[Extracorporeal procedures in sepsis].

Anaesthesiologie

October 2024

Klinik für Anästhesiologie und Intensivmedizin, Universitätsklinikum Tübingen, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Hoppe-Seyler-Straße 3, 72076, Tübingen, Deutschland.

Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis and septic shock are serious conditions linked to infections and can lead to high mortality rates; this article reviews extracorporeal procedures for their treatment.
  • Various treatments like HVHF, VHVHF, HCO, and Polymyxin B hemoperfusion aim to remove inflammatory substances but lack clear evidence for improving patient survival.
  • Despite showing promise in initial studies, risks such as thrombosis and protein loss remain, and further research is needed to establish the safety and efficacy of these treatments for sepsis.
