Natural-abundance (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra are reported for some simple terpenes and carotenes. The techniques involved in the assignment of the resonances to specific carbons are outlined. The potential of this nondegradative procedure for structural analysis is demonstrated for the investigation of carbon atoms in chemical and biochemical systems.

Tropical peatlands are carbon-dense ecosystems that are significant sources of atmospheric methane (CH). Recent work has demonstrated the importance of trees as an emission pathway for CH from the peat to the atmosphere. However, there remain questions over the processes of CH production in these systems and how they relate to substrate supply.

Gas-phase Conformational Landscape and Ring-puckered Structure of 1-aminoindane.

Indane-based molecules are effective scaffolds for different pharmaceutical products, so it is relevant to analyze the relation between structure and functionality in indane derivatives. Here, we have characterized the conformational landscape and molecular structure of 1-aminoindane in the gas phase using chirped-excitation Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy and computational methods. The rotational spectrum confirmed the presence of two conformers, which were identified based on their rotational constants and N nuclear quadrupole coupling tensor elements.

NMR is a central tool in the field of metabolomics, thanks to its ability to provide valuable structural and quantitative information with high precision. Most NMR-based metabolomics studies rely on 1D H detection, which is heavily limited by strong peak overlap. C NMR benefits from a wider spectral dispersion and narrower signal line width but is barely used in metabolomics due to its low sensitivity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how much fatty acids (FAs) are produced by human fetuses and how this relates to the fatty acids present in their mothers' blood at delivery.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 39 mother-fetus pairs, noting significant correlations in specific fatty acid levels between mothers and fetuses, indicating reliance on maternal sources.
  • Results show that while maternal DHA sources differed (algae vs. fish oil), the fetus contributes little to fatty acid production, highlighting the importance of maternal nutrition during pregnancy for fetal development.

Article Synopsis
  • Robust annotation of compounds is essential in metabolomics, and the INADEQUATE NMR experiment is a powerful yet underused tool for structural elucidation due to the lack of community platforms integrating it with other NMR methods.
  • * PyINETA is introduced as an open-source platform that automates the use of INADEQUATE for structural analysis, integrates it with the C-resolved experiment (C-JRES), and maintains a transparent annotation pipeline.
  • * Evaluation of PyINETA in a mouse study demonstrated its capability to track the distribution of C-labeled amino acids across different tissues, revealing specific metabolite enrichment in organs like the liver and spleen.*
