Starting with the expression for optical rotatory dispersion in the absorption region that was arrived at by Condon, two series were considered for the purpose of achieving the experimentally observed, steeper wavelength dependence in the absorption region while retaining the established 1/lambda(2) law in regions removed from absorption. The first two terms of one series in which the second term exhibits a 1/lambda(6) wavelength dependence were found to calculate satisfactorily the optical rotatory dispersion curve of d-camphor-10-sulfonate from 400 mmu to 190 mmu when only three bands were considered. Evaluated at the extrema, the two-term expression can be approximated by a simple equation which allows calculation of the rotational strength of a nonoverlapping band by using only the wavelength and molar rotation of the extrema and the index of refraction of the solution. The rotational strengths calculated from optical rotatory dispersion data in this manner closely agree with those calculated from corresponding circular dichroism data. Thus when position and magnitude of rotatory dispersion extrema alone are reported for carbonyls, it is suggested that such published data may be converted to approximate rotational strengths.

The growing volume of plastics derived from electronic waste (e-waste) underscores the imperative for environmentally sustainable strategies for the management of this waste. In light of the paramount importance of this issue, a pilot demonstrator for the decontamination of polymers containing Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) has been developed. The objective is to investigate the potential for decontaminating BFR-containing polymers from e-waste via UV-visible irradiation using a rotatory laboratory pilot operating under primary vacuum conditions.

Electronic address:

A novel amide alkaloid, bursatamide A (1), featuring an unprecedented propyl-hexahydronaphthalene carbon framework, was isolated from the infrequently studied sea hare Bursatella leachi, alongside a new 3-phenoxypropanenitrile alkaloid, bursatellin B (2), and twelve known compounds. The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated through comprehensive spectroscopic data analyses, while their relative and absolute configurations (ACs) were established through total synthesis and a series of quantum chemical calculations, including calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra, optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) methods, and DP4+ probability analyses. Bursatamide A (1) demonstrated inhibitory effects against the human pathogenic bacteria Listeria monocytogenes and Vibrio cholerae.

Electronic address:

Two new nor-ent-halimane diterpenes and three previously unreported nor-clerodane diterpenes, designated callicaintides A-E (1-5), were isolated from Callicarpa integerrima. Compounds 1 and 2 feature a distinctive 5/6-membered ring system, while compounds 3-5 are characterized by progressively truncated carbon skeletons, containing 18, 17, and 16 carbons, respectively. In addition, four known compounds 6-9 were also identified.

Article Synopsis
  • The origin of homochirality in biological organisms is still a mystery, with some theories suggesting it may have extraterrestrial roots involving chiral molecules in space.
  • A new study shows that specific forms of neutral amino acids can exhibit significant asymmetry in how they break down when exposed to circularly polarized light, challenging previous beliefs about the insignificance of this effect.
  • The results indicate that this dissociation could lead to a notable enantiomeric excess, potentially playing a major role in the development of homochirality in biological systems.
