We studied 279 cases of rectal malformation in the hospitals of Munich, Berne and Lucerne in order to evaluate the mortality in this condition. 51 children died, an overall mortality of 18.2%. Three fourths of these fatalities were due to associated severe malformations, prematurity or brain damage respectively. Eleven children died because of postoperative infections. In the future the use of appropriate measures to avoid these complications should be attempted.

Background: Trauma is a major global public health issue, with an annual death toll of approximately 5 million, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries. Zambia bears a significant burden of trauma-related mortalities, contributing to 7% of all annual deaths and 1 in 5 premature deaths in the country. Despite the significant burden of trauma in our country, few studies have been conducted, with most focusing on high-population centers, and there is a lack of epidemiological data on trauma-related deaths in our region.

Hypertension, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes are highly prevalent and poorly controlled cardiometabolic diseases in the Middle East. Therapeutic non-adherence and therapeutic inertia are major contributors to this suboptimal disease control. Regardless of the cardiometabolic disease, evidence-based solutions may be used to improve therapeutic non-adherence and overcome inertia, and thereby help to alleviate the heavy burden of cardiovascular disease in the Middle East.
