Nutritional status of men under hypokinesia.

J Environ Pathol Toxicol Oncol

May 1990

Hypokinetic Physiology Laboratory, European Institute of Environmental Cybernetics, Athens, Greece.

Hypokinesia (diminished muscular activity) elicits substantial changes in energy and nutritional requirements in humans. The objective of this investigation was to determine the nutritional status of six physically healthy men aged 19 to 21 years under 95 days of hypokinesia without the use of any preventive measures. For the simulation of the hypokinetic effect the men were placed under 95 days of an ad libitum bed rest regimen.

Uropepsinogen (UPG) in human urine was highly purified by chromatography on columns of DEAE-lignocellulose, elastin-celite, etc. The purified UPG was composed of two electrophoretically distinguishable components (UPG I and UPG II), and they were isolated in the pure state, respectively. UPG I and UPG II were the same in molecular weight (3.

Changes in some digestive enzymes (amylase, lipase, uropepsinogen) were studied in the serum and urine of one of the participants in the Soviet-Romanian seven-day space flight on the Soyuz 40-Saliut 6 complex. On the first day after landing it was found an increased total serum and urinary amylase, resulting from the separate increase of pancreatic and salivary amylase, determined by Skude and Ihse's method [14]. In both serum and urine, pancreatic amylase was found in higher amounts than the salivary one.

In 30 randomly selected workers at standard shipyard work-stations, energetic expenditure was estimated by comparing the results with those of biochemical tests used for evaluating the workload degree, such as: creatinine and vitamin C content in urine, uropepsin activity, degree of saturating the organism with vitamin C. The same examinations were carried out in 20 auxiliary and administrative employees composing a control group. The results demonstrate decreased vitamin C level in urine and saliva towards the end of the working day in the productive" group (the one under examination) as compared to the control one.

The determinations were carried out in 25 patients with thrombotic encephalomalacia. The changes in 24-hour urine uropepsin activity were studied after administration of metopirone and dexamethasone. The uropepsin activity in a sample of 24-hour urine was determined by the method of West, Ellis and Scott.
