Background: (18)Fluor-deoxy-glucose PET-scanning of glycolytic metabolism is being used for staging in many tumors however its impact on prognosis has never been studied in breast cancer.
Methods: Glycolytic and hypoxic markers: glucose transporter (GLUT1), carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX), monocarboxylate transporter 1 and 4 (MCT1, 4), MCT accessory protein basigin and lactate-dehydrogenase A (LDH-A) were assessed by immunohistochemistry in two cohorts of breast cancer comprising 643 node-negative and 127 triple negative breast cancers (TNBC) respectively.
Results: In the 643 node-negative breast tumor cohort with a median follow-up of 124 months, TNBC were the most glycolytic (≈70%), followed by Her-2 (≈50%) and RH-positive cancers (≈30%).

Aims: As one of the five lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes, LDH5 has the highest efficiency to catalyze pyruvate transformation to lactate. LDH5 overexpression in cancer cells induces an upregulated glycolytic metabolism and reduced dependence on the presence of oxygen. Here we analyzed LDH5 protein expression in a well characterized large cohort of primary lung cancers in correlation to clinico-pathological data and its possible impact on patient survival.

The antioxidant activity and the membrane effects of linear furanocoumarin marmesinin isolated from Aegle marmelose was evaluated during experimental myocardial injury. Isoproterenol (150 mg kg(-1) intraperitonially twice at an interval of 24 h) caused increase in the levels of serum marker enzymes via creatinekinase (CK), creatinekinase-MB (CK-MB) isoenzyme, lactatedehydrogenase (LDH) and lactatedehydrogenase isoenzyme (LDH1). It also produced electrocardiographic changes such as increased heart rate, reduced R amplitude and ST elevation.

Aim: Few studies have been performed about the risk factors associated with perioperative myocardial damage in patients undergoing valve surgery for severe aortic stenosis.
Methods: To assess the prevalence of perioperative myocardial damage, we studied 103 consecutive patients with aortic stenosis. Perioperative myocardial damage (PMD) was diagnosed by both enzymatic data of peak creatine kinase iso-enzyme (CK-MB) and new appearance of electrocardiographic abnormality.

Several studies addressed the question whether needle-EMG causes elevation of muscle enzymes [aspartate-aminotransferase, alanine-aminotransferase, lactate-dehydrogenase, creatine-phosphokinase (CPK), isoenzyme-MB, aldolase] and lactate with conflicting results. However, these studies used sterilizable needle electrodes and different protocols and methods to record EMGs and determine muscle enzymes. This study examined if muscle enzymes are elevated immediately after or 24 h following EMGs with disposable, concentric needle-electrodes, and if they are dependent on age, sex, muscle, number of investigated sites and previous CPK-elevation.
