Background: A direct link between the tryptophan (Trp) metabolite kynurenine (Kyn) and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is not supported by metabolic considerations and by studies demonstrating the failure of Kyn concentrations of up to 100 μM to activate the receptor in cell culture systems using the proxy system of cytochrome 450-dependent metabolism. The Kyn metabolite kynurenic acid (KA) activates the AhR and may mediate the Kyn link. Recent studies demonstrated down regulation and antagonism of activation of the AhR by Trp.

Light wavelengths that induce meat discoloration and the photoreceptors in the meat were studied. We investigated the effects of the light wavelength on the oxidation rate of myoglobin (Mb) by exposing Mb extracts or model solutions containing Mb to light at specific wavelengths with a bandwidth of 5 nm using a fluorescence spectrophotometer. The wavelengths examined comprised 385, 415, 445, 460, 490, 525, 555, 580, 605, 630,660, and 750 nm.

There is growing evidence of mitochondrial dysfunction and prefrontal cortex (PFC) hypometabolism in bipolar disorder (BD). Older adults with BD exhibit greater decline in PFC-related neurocognitive functions than is expected for age-matched controls, and clinical interventions intended for mood stabilization are not targeted to prevent or ameliorate mitochondrial deficits and neurocognitive decline in this population. Transcranial infrared laser stimulation (TILS) is a non-invasive form of photobiomodulation, in which photons delivered to the PFC photo-oxidize the mitochondrial respiratory enzyme, cytochrome-c-oxidase (CCO), a major intracellular photon acceptor in photobiomodulation.
